Artist: Jan Matejko
Year: 1872

This is a reproduction print of the monumental historical painting “Stephen Báthory at Pskov” (Stefan Batory pod Pskowem), created by Polish painter Jan Matejko in 1872. The artwork depicts King Stephen Báthory of Poland receiving a delegation seeking peace during the Polish-Lithuanian campaign against Muscovy in 1581–1582. The painting commemorates an important episode in the struggle between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Tsardom of Russia during the final phase of the Livonian War. The original artwork belongs to the collection of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Poland.

The historical background of the painting is the Siege of Pskov (1581–1582), one of the most significant military operations of Stephen Báthory's reign. After successful campaigns against Muscovite forces, including the capture of Polotsk in 1579 and Velikiye Luki in 1580, the Polish-Lithuanian army advanced toward Pskov, a heavily fortified city defending the approaches to the Russian interior. Although the city resisted the siege, the campaign increased diplomatic pressure on Tsar Ivan IV, known as Ivan the Terrible. Negotiations ultimately resulted in the Truce of Jam Zapolski in January 1582, under which Russia relinquished its claims to Livonia and returned territories captured during the conflict.

Matejko presents King Stephen Báthory seated in a commanding position, surrounded by Polish-Lithuanian nobles, military commanders and members of his court. Before him, a delegation representing the Russian side approaches in a gesture of submission and negotiation. Among the prominent figures associated with the composition is Antonio Possevino, the Jesuit diplomat who mediated peace negotiations between the Commonwealth and Muscovy. The painting is notable for its richly detailed Renaissance costumes, ceremonial armor, colorful banners and carefully arranged historical figures. Through the contrast between the seated monarch and the approaching delegation, Matejko emphasizes royal authority, diplomatic power and the political importance of the campaign.

Painted in oil on canvas, the original work measures approximately 322 × 545 cm, making it one of Matejko's monumental historical compositions. As one of the most influential Polish painters of the 19th century, Matejko devoted much of his career to depicting defining events in Polish history, using elaborate compositions to explore questions of political power, national identity and historical memory.

The painting should be understood as a symbolic historical interpretation rather than a literal depiction of a single documented ceremony. Matejko combined historical figures and events to communicate the broader significance of Báthory's campaign and the peace settlement. Today, “Stephen Báthory at Pskov” remains an iconic representation of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Livonian War, King Stephen Báthory and the military history of 16th-century Eastern Europe.
