Artist: Alphonse de Neuville
Year: 1880
Historical event depicted: Battle of Rorke's Drift, 22–23 January 1879

This is a reproduction print of the monumental historical painting “The Defence of Rorke's Drift”, created by French military painter Alphonse de Neuville in 1880. The artwork depicts the dramatic defence of a British military outpost against a large Zulu force during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. The battle became one of the most widely remembered engagements of the conflict, and de Neuville's painting remains one of its most recognizable artistic representations. The original painting is held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

The historical background of the painting is the Battle of Rorke's Drift, fought on 22–23 January 1879, shortly after the British defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana. During the Anglo-Zulu War, British forces invaded the independent Zulu Kingdom in southern Africa, seeking to impose British authority over the region. Following the destruction of a substantial British column at Isandlwana, several thousand Zulu warriors advanced toward the mission station and supply depot at Rorke's Drift, located near the border between British-controlled Natal and Zululand.

The outpost was defended by approximately 150 British and colonial personnel, including members of the 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment of Foot, under the command of Lieutenants John Chard and Gonville Bromhead. Facing a much larger Zulu force, the defenders constructed improvised barricades from mealiesacks, biscuit boxes and other supplies. Throughout the afternoon and night, repeated Zulu assaults forced the defenders to retreat into increasingly confined defensive positions. After hours of intense fighting, the Zulu forces withdrew on the morning of 23 January.

De Neuville portrays British soldiers fighting desperately behind a makeshift barricade, surrounded by smoke, flames and the chaos of close-quarter combat. The composition captures the intensity of the battle, with soldiers firing rifles, reloading weapons and defending the position against advancing Zulu warriors. The painting is distinguished by its dramatic lighting, detailed military uniforms, dynamic figures and carefully arranged battlefield action, reflecting the artist's reputation for realistic and emotionally powerful military scenes.

The battle resulted in heavy casualties among the attacking Zulu forces, while the defenders suffered 17 killed and several wounded. Eleven Victoria Crosses were subsequently awarded to participants in the defence, an unusually high number for a single engagement. Although the battle became a celebrated episode in British military history, it formed part of a wider imperial invasion of the Zulu Kingdom, whose forces had achieved a major victory at Isandlwana earlier that same day.

Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 107 × 175 cm. Alphonse de Neuville was one of the leading French military painters of the 19th century, renowned for his detailed depictions of warfare, particularly scenes from the Franco-Prussian War and other contemporary military conflicts.

Today, “The Defence of Rorke's Drift” remains an important example of 19th-century military historical painting, associated with the Anglo-Zulu War, British colonial history, Zulu military history and the dramatic events of January 1879.
