The painting depicts Tadeusz Kościuszko taking his famous oath in Kraków’s Main Market Square on 24 March 1794, an event that marked the beginning of the Kościuszko Uprising. Kościuszko is shown raising his hand before the assembled soldiers and citizens, surrounded by figures representing different parts of Polish society.
Kossak’s dramatic composition commemorates one of the defining moments of the Kościuszko Uprising of 1794, the struggle against Russian and Prussian domination in the final years of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The original painting is held by the Kościuszko Museum in Solothurn, Switzerland.
